Publication in PNAS by the team of Prof. Jacek Radwan, laureate of FNP programmes

" The results of research by the team of Prof. Jacek Radwan from the Faculty of Biology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, a laureate of FNP?s MISTRZ/MASTER and International PhD Projects programmes, have been published in the American journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Prof. Jacek Radwan?s research team studies shortcomings in the immune system. They succeeded in obtaining a better understanding of the source of gaps in the system distinguishing our own cells from pathogens. The immune system has a lot of holes, which are exploited by pathogens like HIV and malarial parasites to effectively hide from our resistance cells, sowing destruction in the organism. Although in populations there is a huge pool of genes enabling discovery of pathogens in the body, a single organism uses only a small portion of these solutions. Perhaps for some reason there is no need for one organism to hold all the aces up its sleeve? The research by the Polish scientists sheds new light on this puzzle.
